about

Chris wanted to write a 'smells of Christmas' song for his latest Christmas music EP, so enlisted the rest of the Brooms to help. We've ended up with a surprisingly not-so silly song that still incorporates many of our favourite festive aromas! It takes a hefty dose of inspiration from the strange Christmas many of us have had in 2020, but we hope it will remain relevant through many seasons to come for anybody facing changed circumstances or a Christmas alone.

lyrics

No parties being planned this year, no packing for travels home
No bustling family gatherings, just chaos, change and fear
But who will miss the traffic lights, last minute bargain chain store fights
Christmas home alone is something else
In attics, boxes, closets there’s the smell
Of tinsel, plastic lights tangled to hell
And the earthy pine aroma of our wonky yuletide tree
Takes me back to Christmas time before
Crumpled foil from chocolates and the pine logs on the fire
I remember all the smells of Christmas time.

No carols in the snow this year, no dashing to and fro
No packed churches filled with candles and incense to bring us cheer
Amid defiant outdoor lights, homespun Christingles burning bright
And online carol concert serenades
An all too silent night
The rain veils the moon and starlight
But our cinnamon scented home still breathes a dream of peace on earth
And sweet apple cider steeped with warming cloves
Boozy orange vapours from a pan of mulling wine
I draw a heady breath of Christmas time

No cooking for a crowd this year – an ordinary day?
But every feast is what you make it, joyful spirit will appear
For circumstances change, no Christmas ever quite the same
We’re all making extra effort now
The oven’s hot, the vegetables are peeled
And distant friends by video are called
Hot pastry, sage and onion, stuffing, roast potatoes, sprouts
Wafting from the oven doors warm glow
Flaming brandy, Christmas pudding, After Eight mince pies
Every breath fills up our lungs with Christmas time
